Chapter Twenty-Two

Lizzy

The guys gave me a few more minutes to compose myself before they rose as one and we turned to leave the temple grounds. Together we made our way through the town toward where the small market stall and shop that Phil and I had stopped at only a couple of days before was located.

The merchant seemed to have recognized us, as he greeted us warmly. I smiled back at him and introduced him to Jase, Stoic and Gere. His smile widened as he pulled us into the backroom of his shop.

We were told to wait at a work bench while he approached several shelves full of wrapped parcels. He grabbed several of them and turned back to us.

“After your last visit, I had hoped that you would return before you left. I had talked with the other merchants you visited and we all agreed that we wished to make sure you and your party were as properly prepared as possible. Please take these on your journey.”

I opened the first package. Inside was a few pieces of light armor. The others opened more parcels and found more armor, clothes and some small weapons. Plenty to clothe and arm all five of us along with what looked to be more than enough dry rations to support us for several weeks. Tears started to well up in my eyes.

“Thank you. Thank you so much. These will help us immensely. You have my word that we will do everything in our power to defeat the monster of the mountains.” Gere and Jase looked at me like I was a little crazy, but Phil only nodded along. To be fair, he was there when we had first met this merchant and knew what the price he requested was.

The merchant nodded along gratefully as he helped us repack most of the items. The only things that didn’t get packed away was a simple set of leather pants and vest that Stoic pulled aside and donned, with the help of Jase.

That done, we thanked the merchant again, gathered our new supplies and made our way back to the temple to sort out our loot. We sat in our little corner of the sleeping hall with a map we had found in one of the bags spread out between us. Together, we started to plan our route to the mountain, figuring out what roads we could take as far as we could to avoid any potential dangers lurking in the woods.

“If we take this road, it might add another week or so, but we stay on the main paths and shouldn’t run into anything bad,” Gere said, as he traced along a road that would more than double the distance and take us through multiple cities and towns.

Jase scoffed and slapped his friend’s hand away from the map.

“Look, I get where you are coming from, but adding all those extra miles will just tire us out more and delay our chances of getting home. You might be okay with that, but I’m not.
